SUMMARY:Coffee Hour - Writing your own obituary
DESCRIPTION:This month at Coffee Cafe\, Jen Bella will guide particpants in writing their own obituary.\nThis slightly tongue in cheek  exercise aims to put the announcement of your death back\nin your hands as opposed to your survivors.  This hour will emphasize your lives as opposed\nto what may be usually bland details.  With the goal of normalizing this chore\,\nthis practice can help participants gain  a different perspective on something we all face:\nour eventual death.\n\nJen is a licensed clinical social worker in Maine and on the board of trustees for the Denmark\nPublic Library.

SUMMARY:Book Group - “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks
DESCRIPTION:On October 8th the book group will talk about  “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks \n  \nAccording to Goodreads \nA discarded painting in a junk pile\, a skeleton in an attic\, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands\, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit\, obsession\, and injustice across American history \nKentucky\, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war\, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night\, he reunites with the stallion and his groom\, very far from the glamor of any racetrack. \nNew York City\, 1954. Martha Jackson\, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters\, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. \nWashington\, DC\, 2019. Jess\, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia\, and Theo\, a Nigerian-American art historian\, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse–one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance\, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. \nBased on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington\, Horse is a novel of art and science\, love and obsession\, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

Register at https://denmarkarts.org\n\n\nWe are very excited to welcome Amanda Peters talking about her debut novel The Berry Pickers! She has been featured as part of the The Maine Public Book Club series and at other venues around the state.\nIn her novel\, “a four-year-old Mi’kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine\, sparking a tragic mystery that haunts the survivors\, unravels a community\, and remains unsolved for nearly fifty years.  \nJuly 1962. A Mi’kmaq family from Nova Scotia arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later\, four-year-old Ruthie\, the family’s youngest child\, vanishes. She is last seen by her six-year-old brother\, Joe\, sitting on a favorite rock at the edge of a berry field. Joe will remain distraught by his sister’s disappearance for years to come. \nIn Maine\, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant\, her mother frustratingly overprotective. Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older\, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren’t telling her. Unwilling to abandon her intuition\, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret. \nFor readers of The Vanishing Half and Woman of Light\, this showstopping debut by a vibrant new voice in fiction is a riveting novel about the search for truth\, the shadow of trauma\, and the persistence of love across time.” Goodreads \nhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/123036004-the-berry-pickers?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=xCD7Sbe1Zc&rank=1\nAll Authors Series Events are held at the\nDenmark Arts Center\nand are pay-what-you-can.
